St. Antonius Ziekenhuis
Four-metre-high colourful giraffe ambitious top clinical training hospital
St Antonius Hospital, a leading top clinical teaching hospital with eight locations in the central Netherlands, has a striking addition at its sites in Utrecht and Nieuwegein: a four-metre-high colourful giraffe by Ocean Sole. Made from over 2,000 worn-out flip-flops, these imposing works of art serve as vibrant symbols that exude sustainability, hope and strength, among other things.
An inspiring discovery
Wenny Braam, department head of Services Utrecht & Woerden, shares her inspiration behind the choice of Ocean Sole: "It was actually a coincidence that we ended up at Ocean Sole. The hospital values sustainable care and the symbolism and beautiful story behind this colourful art inspired me greatly."
Sustainability in action
At St Antonius Hospital, the aim is to raise awareness about sustainable action, taking it for granted in everything they do. Braam explains: "By buying these works of art, we are contributing to a cleaner environment as well as solid employment. We are very happy to now have two giraffes on our sites, to inspire young and old alike."
A symbol of hope and transformation
The giraffes symbolise more than sustainability; they also represent the strength and resilience of patients during their stay in hospital. Braam stresses, "These giraffes prominently displayed in our hallway symbolise this often arduous journey. The giraffes are also preceded by quite a journey. The journey from a discarded and forgotten flip-flop to a new proud and colourful giraffe that stands strong in life."
A future of hope
With these impressive works of art, St Antonius Hospital hopes not only to inspire patients, visitors and staff, but also to convey a message of hope and a bright future. Braam concludes, "We hope that these impressive images inspire many patients, visitors and employees of St Antonius Hospital to look forward to a bright future."
